چکیده

do.usbr. Summary We investigate the applicability of the Two-dimensional, Runoff, Erosion and Export (TREX) model to simulate extreme floods on large watersheds in semi-arid regions in the western United States. Spatially-distributed extreme storm and channel components are implemented so that the TREX model can be applied to this problem. TREX is demonstrated via calibration, validation and simulation of extreme storms and floods on the 12,000 km Arkansas River watershed above Pueblo, Colorado. The model accurately simulates peak, volume and time to peak for the record June 1921 extreme flood calibration and a May 1894 flood validation. A Probable Maximum Precipitation design storm is used to apply the calibrated model. The distributed model TREX captures the effects of spatial and temporal variability of extreme storms for dam safety purposes on large watersheds, and is an alternative to unit-hydrograph rainfall-runoff models. a 2007 Elsevier B.V. OF DISSERTATION FREQUENCY ANALYSIS AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL SIMULATIONS OF EXTREME FLOODS ON A LARGE WATERSHED Estimates of extreme floods and probabilities are needed in hydrologic engineering and in risk analysis to assess the safety of dams. This research focuses on developing a twodimensional, distributed model to simulate extreme floods with return periods up to 10,000 years. The four objective...

Increasing vulnerability to extreme floods and societal needs of hydrological forecasting

Recent climatic variability seems to be intensifying the hydrological extremes resulting in devastating hydrological hazards, especially floods all over the world, including the arid regions. Disasters are always more tragic in poor countries than in rich ones, as more poor people seem to suffer and die, and the economic losses have a greater impact. On the other hand, in advanced countries, al...

Extreme flood sensitivity to snow and forest harvest, western Cascades, Oregon, United States

[1] We examined the effects of snow, event size, basin size, and forest harvest on floods using >1000 peak discharge events from 1953 to 2006 from three small (<1 km), paired‐watershed forest‐harvest experiments and six large (60–600 km) basins spanning the transient (400–800 m) and seasonal (>800 m) snow zones in the western Cascades of Oregon. Retrospectively classified rain‐on‐snow events de...

The occurrence trend of floods in recent years shows that the most of Iran regions located in attacks of destructive floods and loss of life and property of flood damages is increasing. Watershed management practices (WMPs) are one of the superior and appropriate solutions for flood hazards mitigation. The impact of WMPs can be investigated using different approaches. In this study, the direct ...
